Online Personal Training in NZ: How It Works and Who It Suits
Online personal training puts a programme built for you, demo videos, progress tracking and check-ins with a coach into an app. It suits people outside the main centres, shift workers, travellers and busy parents. Everest online coaching starts at $10 a week, with a one-off $30 App Portal Access, and is billed weekly with six-week blocks as the minimum term.
“Does online coaching actually work?” is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on what is behind the app. A training app on its own is a library of workouts. What changes results is a person who looks at where you are, builds the plan around your week, and adjusts it when life gets in the way.
This guide explains how online personal training works in New Zealand, who it suits, and what to know before you sign up.
What online personal training is, and is not
Online personal training should give you:
- A programme built for you, not a generic plan, based on your goals, level, schedule and equipment.
- Demo videos beside the exercises, so you know what you are doing.
- Progress tracking, so you can see what is changing.
- Coach contact: feedback, check-ins and a plan that moves as you progress.
It is not a replacement for medical care or for a physio. If you have an injury or a health condition, speak to your GP or physio first, and tell your coach.
How online coaching works with Everest
The process is simple:
- A first conversation. A short call about your goals, your history and what has and has not worked for you.
- Set-up and assessment. You get access to the Everest app, and we record your starting point, so there is something to measure later progress against.
- Train. You follow your programme at home or in a gym, with demo videos and tracking in the app.
- Check in and adjust. You get feedback from your coach, and the plan changes as you progress.
Everest currently coaches clients in New Zealand, South Africa and Canada this way, with one-on-one consultations by video call. It works the same whether you are in a main centre or a long way from one.
The three levels
Everest has three levels of online support. Each carries a one-off $30 App Portal Access.
- EVEREST365 ($10 a week). Structured app training for beginners: what to do, how to start and how to progress. Self-guided. Good if you are motivated and want a clear plan at low cost.
- Everest Personal ($20 a week). A personalised programme with coach support, structured progression and accountability through the app. Good if you want a plan built around you.
- Everest Premium ($60 a week). Everything in Everest Personal, plus a body scan at the start of each six-week block and a weekly 30-minute check-in call. Good if you want a more direct relationship with your coach.
If you are not sure which fits, the 60-second programme finder will suggest one and does not ask for your email.
Who online coaching suits
Online training tends to work well for:
- People outside the main centres, who want real coaching without a long drive or a move.
- Shift workers and frequent travellers, who need a plan they can pick up wherever they are.
- Parents, who need training that fits around the household.
- People who like to track things, with demo videos, progress and check-ins in one place.
When in person may be better
Online is not right for everyone. It can be harder if:
- you find it hard to start without someone physically there
- you would like hands-on help with technique, especially at the beginning
- you have an injury that needs assessment first, in which case start with your GP or a physio
If you are in Christchurch or Rolleston, you do not have to choose. You can combine the app with in-person sessions. See personal training in Christchurch or Rolleston.
What you need
Not much. A phone for the app, a place to train and some time in your week. That place can be a full gym, a home setup with minimal kit, or bodyweight only. The programme is built around what you can actually reach.
What to know before you sign up
It is worth reading the terms of anything you pay for weekly. In summary, from the Everest terms of purchase:
- Everest Personal, EVEREST365 and Everest Premium are weekly subscriptions, billed weekly in advance.
- Each runs in six-week blocks, which is the minimum term.
- To cancel, give two weeks’ notice before your next six-week block begins. Your access and billing continue until that notice period ends.
- EVEREST365 and Everest Personal are billed through Trainerize. How Everest Premium is billed is confirmed in writing before you pay.
- The one-off $30 App Portal Access is paid by card through Stripe.
Please read the full terms before you start, as they are the complete version.
How to get the most out of online coaching
- Check in, even in a bad week. That is when adjusting the plan matters most.
- Be honest about your equipment and time. A plan built around the real week works. A plan built around an ideal one does not.
- Log your sessions. It is how your coach and you see what is changing.
- Tell your coach about pain, illness or a big change in your week.
- Give a full six-week block before you judge it. That is long enough to see how you respond.
